Value matters.
We all want to be valuable, right? Society and culture have a measuring stick
for this; it is called income, and what you bring in, is a physical by-product
of how valuable you are. This scale only works if we compare though. A person's
salary can only be gauged in comparison to another person's salary. So in other
words, money sets value. Like it or not, that is a pretty factual statement. I
am not saying it is true; what I am saying is that it is what we believe is
true.
For the
sake of argument let's say that one of your co-workers, doing the same job for
the same time, was to get a $10,000 raise, and you did not. What might you think?
That unfairness had occurred? At the least, we would be bothered, and more than
likely we would "have a problem" with this, and one that we would
share with anyone who would listen, right?... and everyone will listen, won't
they.
What if,
after the fact, you found out that your co-worker had a young son who was
diagnosed with cancer, and that there was a new treatment available that
insurance did not cover? The company you work for actually cut some expenses to
give the employee the raise so he could afford the treatment for his son. Would
that change how you feel? Would that change your value or his value?
What has
happened that we see the need to be the purveyors of value? Why do we so often, need to
compare what we have, with what others have? Do you know what would, or
could happen if there was no-one to compare ourselves with or to? We might find
that far, far away place called contentment. Maybe we should let value be set
by the Creator, and take the burden off ourselves, after all He made us.
"There
is neither Jew nor Gentile, neither slave nor free, nor is there male and
female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus." Galatians 3:28.
"For
God does not show favoritism." Romans 2:11.
So what
do you say? Let's spend a little less time wondering what our value is compared
to someone else's money, and more time rejoicing in who God made us to be. We
could get a whole lot more done for His Kingdom...and that's PRICELESS.
...just
sayin'
In His
grip,
Pastor Pat
